Being a small businessman (That means having a small business not being under five foot tall) means that there is often a temptation to continually work. Unfortunately I succumb to that temptation, I generally work. One of the places that I often do work is in the car. Now I am not sending e-mails. I am not texting, although I have been known to do it at traffic lights for example. What I tend to do is to listen to podcasts.
Having an iPhone means that I can put the podcast on in the car and from that I can listen to whichever one I want. One of my most listened ones is by Dom Goucher and Pete Williams and is called Preneurcast.

Preneurcast Podcast
Preneurcast is an excellent podcast if you are interested in marketing, both on and off line, and also if you want to know more about productivity hacks and tips in order to make your workflow a lot easier. So far there been 38 episodes and those episodes have all had at least one interesting tip that you can take action upon, even the note taking episode Image may be NSFW.

Now I don’t say this because I know Dom and I work with him on a project too. I do say it because anyone who’s got a small or medium size business, on or off line, really should be listening to this podcast. I have suggested it to a lot of friends within a few networking groups that I am in and every single one of them who has listened to it thinks it is solid gold information.
So what is the process for listening to this? Well there are various options.
The first option is to go to www.preneurmedia.tv and listen directly on the page. (You also get to see how a really good website should be set out for podcasts.)
The second is to subscribe in iTunes (You can do this from the Preneur Media page) and then listen to it through iTunes. You can also stream this to your television for example using Apple TV.
My preferred option is to use an app called Casts or Pocketcasts as it used to be called and get it to download onto my iPhone and then I can listen to it in the car. The distance between my house and Valencia is roughly 25 minuntes Pocketcasts allows me to put the podcast on one and a half times normal speed because it’s usually around 40 min and get to Valencia just as the podcast is finishing. (Hot Tip: If you put it on two times speed Sr Williams is incomprehensible usually unless you process information really, really quickly! He also sounds less smurf like at x1.5)
Then the information that I’ve listened to is thought about, assimilated and processed and eventually when I get home or the next day or something I will look at the show notes for any tips that were given. And this is a really good thing. Dom and Pete have put together a comprehensive show notes package which takes you straight to the information that they have given in this program. Another good part about the podcast is that Dom and Pete have been regular. They definitely eat their fibre. They have brought one out every week for 38 weeks now. By doing this they manage to create a community of people following the podcast and retain listeners. Many podcasts start off with good intentions then they become less and less regular. The best example of this will be “Internet Marketing This Week” which became “Internet Marketing This Month” and eventually became “Internet marketing sometime this decade possibly if we can get a few people together”. That was a real shame because it was an excellent overview of Internet marketing in general and the part about weekly recommendations was usually inspired.
Of course there are other things you can do in the car. You can get frustrated as you sit at traffic lights and curse. You can listen to Justin Bieber on loop so that when you get out of the car you are ready to kill anybody in your path (I actually find this useful for when I have to visit any number of banks in Valencia). Or you could sit and stare in silence listening to the engine turn over and wondering what that noise was!
I think I know a better way of staying productive.
